PICTURES & PRINTS
How can I select the best pictures?
With each of our products we provide tips and suggestions for choosing the best pictures. What you want to look for are photographs that are clear and in-focus. When scanning images, scan at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for use in a book or 600 dpi for larger applications such as our photo wall art. Certain product design styles work best with select images, such as close ups, profiles or a limited number of subject in a photo. Please reference the tips for the style you select to ensure that you receive the best quality product.

Can you use photo prints to create custom products?
At this time we are not able to accept hard copy photographs, instead we suggest that you contact your local photo developer or copy center for scanning services. For the best quality, we recommend scanning at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for our books and photo accessories and 600 dpi for our large format products. It is also recommended that you clean the scanner glass (or request that it is cleaned) with a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner (any isopropanol and butoxypropanol based glass cleaner) to minimize the particles that may interfere with your scanned images. We plan to offer high resolution scanning services for a reasonable cost, so please check back often if you’re interested in this service.

Scanner Cleaning Caution:
It is recommended that you avoid isopropyl alcohol cleaners because it leaves streaks on the glass, and no cleaner with abrasives, acetone, benzene or carbon tetrachloride should be used as these chemicals can damage the scanner glass.
How do I scan my photos?
- Access your home scanner or a scanner at your local photo developer, copy center, or library. Clean the scanner glass (or request that it be cleaned) using a lint-free cloth and glass cleaner (any isopropanol and butoxypropanol based glass cleaner) to minimize the particles that may interfere with your scanned images. Scanner Cleaning Caution: It is recommended that you avoid isopropyl alcohol cleaners because it leaves streaks on the glass, and no cleaner with abrasives, acetone, benzene or carbon tetrachloride should be used as these chemicals can damage the scanner glass.
- Access the settings panel and verify that the default resolution is 300 dpi or better (the higher the resolution, the better the quality and the more time each scan will take). If you know that you will be using your photographs in large format products please scan at a minimum of 600 dpi.
- Place each image on the scanner glass and press the appropriate scan button for your photo (color for color photos and black for black and white images).
- Once your images are scanned into your selected file destination you will be able to complete the order process as you would with digital images. If you do not have a home scanner please contact your local photo developer or copy center for a list of their services and prices.

ENHANCING PHOTOS
What is the standard editing process?
Each of our graphic designers will apply the same standard to each of your pictures. We optimize contrast levels, resolution, and color; eliminate red eye; crop to focus on the subject; and adjust background when appropriate.
What are the advanced editing options?
Advanced editing is available if you have images that require more detailed editing, such as: removing specific objects/people; eliminating blemishes or wrinkles; removing shadows; restoring damaged or worn images. If you are uploading a picture that requires advanced editing, please include specific instructions in the Special Instructions box next to that image and we will email you with a quote for the editing. If you would like to have advanced editing performed on an image that is not being used in a product, please email the image as a JPG or TIF to productinquiry@memorylanedesigns.com and specify the editing that you would like performed and we will reply with a quote.
How can I request that my pictures are not edited?
If you prefer that specific pictures are not edited or cropped, you can indicate this in the special instructions box located under the appropriate photo.
What are the photo cropping standards?
Our designers crop photos with the goal of focusing on the subject of the photo. In some cases, the background is a distraction to those in the photo, and in other situations the background tells a story. It is often difficult for the designers to make that judgment, so we take cues from the style of book or wall art requested, and the special instructions you provide. When appropriate and space provides, the designer may include the entire picture AND a cropped version.
